The 31st InterMarque Spring Kick-Off car show is now in the books!
Held in Osseo, MN on May 18, 2024, the show attracted a good crowd and a great number of foreign cars. We handed out 250 goody bags, and an attendant at the registration table said another 20 cars followed. We also had about 16 vintage motorcycles.
The featured marque this year was Volkswagen. Counting the miniature motorbike built underneath a VW Beetle fender, we had 31 and 1/4 Volkswagens in attendance. There are always a few especially interesting cars, including a 1910 Peugeot, and a very rare 1964 Type 3 Ghia Volkswagen. While not registered for the show, on the fringes I found a 1957 Dodge pickup truck, and a 1940 Chevrolet business coupe. Always nice to see some variety at our show, even though they are domestic products.
The Girl Scouts sell tickets to the public so attendees can vote for People’s Choice Award. The winner, with 44 votes was John Jacobson and his Mercedes 190SL convertible. Although there are no plaques for 2nd and 3rd place, the car getting the second highest count was a Heather Yellow Lotus owned by Christopher Krueger (37 votes), and 3rd place went to Daniel Romero for his 1967 Alfa Romeo Spider, with 30 votes. The Girl Scouts made $1,000 in sales, which I think sets a record for them. Cross Industries collected non-perishable food, toiletry items and cash. We don’t yet have a count, they were seen pushing a trolley with 12 filled banana boxes toward their truck.
We also try to recognize parties who provide support for our event with metal “THANK U” license plates. This year, Bob & Carl’s car repair shop and Union Speed & Style were recognized this year.
Pat Holt, of the Minnesota Triumph Club organized another valve cover race, held outside City Hall. 2024 had a turnout of 12 racers with competition featuring many marques. This year the competition was very close between VW, Alfa, Triumph, MG and one missing the actual valve cover. Several people said they will build one for next year. But when all the running was over Max Schlemmer and his Triumph Stag valve cover was this year’s champion 🏆
A meeting to review the show was held on June 15, 2024, at Elsie’s restaurant, where SAAB was selected as the 2025 featured marque. The event will be held on May 17.
