Citroëns storm the Bastille!

–By Brian Cornell– One of the pleasures of owning any enthusiast car is the connection to community and culture. Whether it is a DeLorean at a Back to the Future screening or your neighborhood Cars and Coffee. Cars still connect.

The MN Citroën Club turned out 9 French cars to help the Alliance Francaise celebrate Bastille Day on Friday, July 14. The event featured live music, dancing, food, beverages, and an eclectic range of other activities for the entire family. It was an enjoyable night, albeit with a slight threat of thunderstorms.

Participating in events like this is an opportunity to engage those who might not otherwise be exposed to vintage foreign cars. Attendees were surprised to learn that the 2CV, in its classic form, was produced from 1948 to 1990. That more than 9 million hit the streets (if you include their “chassis cousins” the Ami and Truckette). And, at its highest-point of horsepower evolution, the 2CV’s air-cooled, 602cc (2CV6), 2 cylinder boxer engine… generating 29hp… can propel a properly tuned 2CV, (exercising precise momentum management), up to 125kph (77mph)!

The parents and kids appeared to be equally as engaged and excited to see the wide variety of unique cars and chat with the owners. From the utilitarian Citroen and Peugeot wagons, to the classic Traction Avant, quirky 2CVs, and the exotic SM. Memories were shared of family members who had similar cars. Stories included a 2CV trip taken across the Middle East in the 60s, the lack of air-conditioning in a Traction Avant, and coaxing a 2CV through mountain passes in the Alps… simply more time to enjoy the panoramic vistas!

The chance to sit in these unique cars was a thrill for many as well (even if it had to be made clear that you must talk to the owner prior to doing so). A short parade route was even arranged! Marie Antoinette caught a ride in a red 2CV… that appropriately ended with ROAD CLOSED AHEAD.

For cars to continue to generate memories and connections we must seek out creative ways to get them in front of people, share why we enjoy the hobby, and how we maintain these vintage cars. Keep an eye out for events that might pair nicely with your club or ride!
