Below is a note from Tom Hazen regarding recent updates to this InterMarque favorite. While space may be already sold our for the time trials he is actively looking for volunteers to support this year’s effort. Please read below.
Dear Friends with vintage cars,
I hope this message finds you and your loved ones safe and healthy during these difficult times.
In case you haven’t heard, I’m pleased to announce that I have partnered with Matt Krajniak, President of the Illinois Sports Owners Association (a Triumph club in the Chicago area) and his wife Reese Krajniak. They have competed at Waumandee multiple times, Matt in his red TR6, and Reese in her blue Mini. They have formed “Midwest Motoring, LLC” to promote events for vintage cars. Our shared goal is to keep the hillclimb in Waumandee alive. We are planning a safe and fun return to the beautiful hills of Waumandee coming up in a couple months on Saturday, October 10th (rain date Sunday, October 11th) for the inaugural “Waumandee Time Trials” which will be run just like I’ve run the Waumandee Hillclimb in the past. Only the name and the sponsorship have changed.
We are working hard to plan a safe event, both in terms of driving, and for Covid-19 infection control. We will be socially distancing all day, from the drivers meeting in the morning to the presentation of the award certificates after the course goes cold. For the first time in the history of this event, our paddock will be at the BOTTOM of Blank Hill Road, in a huge open-air field right next to the starting line. There will be plenty of space to spread out and socially distance. Our charity caterer providing the tasty breakfast and lunch service has developed detailed plans for careful “touch-free” service. Their lunch will be free to you if you decide to be an all-day corner worker. During the lunch break, we will not be congregating under a tent, but rather spread out at many smaller tables, with big bottles of hand sanitizer at each table. The awards banquet dinner will be socially distanced as well as delicious!
Ladies and gentlemen, you know I enjoy seeing you at my events. Even though this one is more than two months away, I’m reaching out to you now because many of you have been so helpful volunteering at some of my past events.
The Waumandee Time Trials simply could not happen without the kind and generous volunteer efforts of great people like you. Thank you for all you’ve done!
Volunteers are needed from 8:30AM to 5:30PM with a nice long break for lunch, of course. If you can stay all day, you will receive free refreshments at your station, free lunch, free broasted chicken dinner, and my undying gratitude.
CLICK HERE for a description of the corner worker duties, as well as a map of the course showing where the stations are located, so you can pick one spot in the morning, and then a different spot in the afternoon, if you like. Just let me know!
Please reply to this email or call me at sixonetwo 237-1883 if you are willing to help us again this year, and thanks once more for all you’ve done to support the enjoyment of vintage cars at past events.
For those of you unfamiliar with the event, this is a hillclimb for vintage (1990 or older) vehicles on a smooth paved road in western Wisconsin. Street cars and race cars are welcome. The course rises 430 vertical feet in 2.3 miles, with 18 turns and a nice straight-away before the finish line.
If you’d like to register as a driver, the urgent news is the event is almost sold out! We already have 53 signups out of a maximum of 60.
To see if space is still available you can visit https://www.mwmotoring.com/waumandee to register online.
Here is an in-car camera video from the fastest run up the hill at our most recent event. Do you think you’re faster than this guy? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HT3Siqa1-Qg By the way, he’s driving a 1976 Triumph Spitfire with a Honda S2000 drivetrain. Our definition of “vintage” is somewhat flexible.

Thanks for reading, and I hope to see you on the hill in October!
Safety Fast,
- Tom
